The Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois Senate have declared June 13, 2025, as “SURS Retiree Appreciation Day” to honor and recognize the ongoing contributions and value of SURS retirees across the State.

On this day, we recognize, honor, and express our appreciation for more than 75,000 SURS retirees and their beneficiaries.

Throughout the years, SURS retirees dedicated their public careers to the higher education community in Illinois, serving millions of students at nine universities, 39 community colleges, and 13 affiliated agencies throughout the state.

And during their post-employment years, SURS retirees remain committed to Illinois. In fact, 77% of SURS retirees live in Illinois and re-invest a portion of their $2.1 billion in annual purchasing power back into the local economy. Through their presence and continuous investment into their communities, SURS retirees help the state grow.

Executive Director Suzanne Mayer commented, “Today, as with every day, we are grateful for the hard work and dedication SURS retirees have provided to advance higher education in Illinois. In return, we remain committed to providing them high quality service as they enjoy their well-earned retirement years.”

Since 1941, SURS has been dedicated to delivering the benefits promised to our over 255,000 participants, retirees, and beneficiaries.
