William Mabe, board secretary and executive director of the State Universities Retirement System (SURS), has announced the System will hold a board election during April 2015 to fill three expiring trustee positions. An impartial election services company will conduct the election. Candidate packets and petition forms will be available October 1, 2014, from SURS.
The SURS Board of Trustees consists of 11 trustees: four appointed by the Governor, four active participants elected by the participants of SURS, two annuitants elected by the annuitants of the System, and, as set forth in the Illinois statute, the appointed chairperson of the Illinois Board of Higher Education serves as the chairperson of the SURS Board of Trustees.
Two participating (active) board member terms and one annuitant (retired) board member term will expire in 2015. Jacqueline Berger, Antonio Vasquez and Mitchell Vogel currently hold the seats, respectively.
The voting period will be April 1 through May 1, 2015, with results to be announced on May 2, 2015. Active member candidates are nominated by petitions in writing, signed by no less than 400 participants. Annuitant candidates are also nominated by petitions in writing, signed by no less than 100 annuitants. All candidates must also complete an application.
All eligible SURS members will receive a ballot along with candidate information via the U.S. Mail. Members will be able to vote by returning the paper ballot in a postage-paid envelope or, for the first time, by phone or online. Voting will be handled directly through the election services company.
The SURS Board meets at least quarterly, with additional committee meetings scheduled throughout the year. Trustees are also required to meet certain annual ethics, legislative and fiduciary training as well as complete eight hours of educational conferences on investments and public pension administration.
Elected trustees will each serve six-year terms beginning July 15, 2015.
