Tier I
A member is assigned to Tier I when his or her first participation date with SURS or another eligible
Illinois Reciprocal Retirement System is prior to January 1, 2011.*
Tier II
A member is assigned to Tier II when his or her first participation date with SURS or another eligible
Illinois Reciprocal System is on or after January 1, 2011.*
Tier Unknown
A member is assigned as Tier Unknown when SURS does not have sufficient information on file to make
a tier assignment.
*NOTE: Public Act 96-0889 made no changes to the Self-Managed Plan (SMP). SURS benefits under SMP are the
same regardless of tier assignment.
